The MidAtlantic Trade Adjustment Assistance Center (MATAAC) has launched a new website making it easier for mid-Atlantic manufacturers who have been negatively impacted by foreign competition to apply for grants. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce, MATAAC provides guidance and matching federal grants that help qualified manufacturers increase sales and production, enhance job growth and retention, and strengthen their position in the global marketplace.
William J. Bujalos, Director of MATAAC, said, “In order to level the playing field against low-cost overseas competition, many U.S. manufacturers must invest in new technology, efficiency upgrades, training and education, cost-control programs and new product development. Companies can apply for our grants at no charge, and those that qualify can use the funds to pay for consulting services to help implement projects intended to improve competitiveness.”
The total amount of technical assistance that a firm can qualify for is based on its number of employees and sales revenue. Companies can qualify for a maximum of $150,000, which is cost-shared 50/50 between the Federal Government and the Firm.
Firms may be eligible for grant funds if they have experienced a decline, or impending decline, in employment; a decline in sales or production; and have felt the effects of increased foreign competition, such as customers reducing their purchases in favor of imported products.
